Gratitude

Pray diligently. Stay alert, with your eyes wide open in gratitude.
Colossians 4:2–4 MSG

Gratitude is defined as the feeling of being grateful or thankful. But many times in our human bodies, our feelings don’t match up with the truth. We may have all our needs met and a loving family, and still we struggle with a depression we don’t understand. We may be married to an attentive and thoughtful husband, but we’ve lost that “in love” feeling.

When you have trouble with your feelings, immediately run to the truth of God’s Word and recount what you know to be true. Write down truths from God and then keep them in your regular line of vision:

  • I am free and clean in the blood of Christ.
  • He has rescued me from darkness and has brought me into His kingdom.
  • God sings over me.
  • He delights in me.
  • I am a friend of Christ.
  • Nothing can separate me from God’s love (certainly not my feelings!).
  • God knows me intimately.
  • God sees me as beautiful and I am wonderfully made.
  • God is for me, not against me.

This is truth from His Word! And when you focus on truth, your confusing thoughts start to become clear. . .and amazingly enough, your feelings begin to turn back on!

God, please remind me of what is true so that I can feel a sense of gratitude for You, for others, and for all the blessings in my life. Amen.
