And He shall stand and feed His flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord His God; and they shall abide, for now He shall be great to the ends of the earth.
Micah 5:4 NKJV
Shepherds were not society’s most desired company. They tended to be rough, ragged, scrappy men who lived in the wilderness with the livestock. When the prophet Micah prophesized about the coming Messiah, he used language that the Israelites would not have guessed; Jesus will shepherd, be great, be their peace.
What is your peace? Do you place peace in your work, accomplishments, talents, or money? There are numerous things that offer peace, though they are not peace. Christ doesn’t just bring peace; it’s who He is. What a remarkable God we have who is the essence of peace and love—two things we strive to gain. When we strive, we feel compelled to work for peace, love, or righteousness, and all our works fall short. Christ did not come to earth and die and rise again so that we could meet Him halfway in a bargain. No, His incarnation, death, and resurrection were to pay the full price for our sins.
Praise the Lord for taking my sins away. The debt that You demanded, You also paid. Lord, this fact is astounding. Forgive me for placing my trust and hope in false gods. Reveal the areas of my heart where I have strayed from You. Amen.
