Humility

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
Philippians 2:5–7 NKJV

If someone were to ask you, “Do you consider yourself equal to God?” your answer would be an emphatic, “No!” But how often do our actions overwrite our answer? Where do you tend to worry, fret, take hold, and micromanage? We subconsciously think we know best or have the most knowledge of our finances, children, job, husband, or friend. But as scripture constantly reminds us, the Lord knows every aspect of our being.

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul is not merely suggesting that we have a Christlike attitude. Instead, he is adamantly instructing us to take this mind-set and make it our daily thought process. Notice, Paul doesn’t say, “This mind is already in you.” Humility is not natural for us; it is at times the hardest part of our walk with the Lord.

If Christ, fully God and fully man, did not consider equality with God a thing to be obtained, why do we? Christ’s humility is astounding! He is God, but He became a servant. How effective is a servant who continually wishes to be the master? Until we realize that our sinful nature is what prevents us from entering into a relationship with the Lord and living for His glory, then walking with our Savior is not a thing to be grasped.

Father, forgive me for trying to be You. Though I don’t want to admit it, my pride is a great and daily struggle. Lord, help me to wait, listen, and obey. Amen.
