Fatherly Love

Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
1 Kings 19:11–13 NKJV

We serve a great and powerful God, yet He is also a Father. For example, God shows such compassion to Elijah in today’s passage. He doesn’t come in the fire, wind, or earthquake; He approaches Elijah as a father would approach a scared child. God comes in a whisper and asks a simple question: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

God knew full well why Elijah had fled, but He wanted Elijah to examine the situation. This compassion and pure fatherly love is how God directs us. Like a father comforting a child, the Lord asks us to step back and look at the situation with Him. Our trouble is not near as great as our Father’s. Our circumstances cannot trump Him or thwart His plan. God said it Himself, “I am, who I am.” There is no beginning or end to our God, and all these circumstances and troubles are a part of His plan.

Thank You, Lord, for speaking to me in a still, small voice. You are kind and compassionate to hear my cry, listen, and answer. Amen.
