Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praises to His name, for it is pleasant.
Psalm 135:3 NKJV
We hear it in church, we say it to others, and we want to believe it. God is good. All the time.
The Bible says it so we know it is true. Jesus lived it so we could see it in living color. But sometimes, when life yanks hard and pulls the rug out from under us, we begin to doubt. And that is probably a normal human temptation. Though we know that good parents discipline their children and sometimes allow them to learn “the hard way,” we expect God, our heavenly Father, to do it differently.
So we need reminders. And He put them in our world everywhere we turn, at unexpected junctions and in the most ordinary places. Warm sunshine, brilliant flowers, rainbows after storms, newborn babies, friendships, families, food, air to breathe, pets, church dinners, sunrises, sunsets, beaches, forests, prairies, mountains, the moon and stars at night and puffy clouds in the day. All around us are hints that God is good and that His works are beautiful and life-giving.
When disease or tragedy or hardship enters our lives, we can rest assured that God is not the author of these destructive things and that someday He will cleanse this globe of its misery and set everything right. Until then, He has given us His strength, His hope, and His promise. That is enough to keep us going.
Father God, I praise You. You are good. Your works are wonderful. I know You love me. Help me to trust Your plan and purpose for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
