God said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t trust me, didn’t treat me with holy reverence in front of the People of Israel, you two aren’t going to lead this company into the land that I am giving them.”
Numbers 20:12 MSG
Moses, Aaron, and the Israelites were in Kadesh without water. So, of course, the people started complaining to Moses.
In response, Moses and Aaron went to God. The Lord, patient as always, told them to take Moses’ staff, speak to the rock, and it would bring out water. But when the brothers went before the people, an irritated Moses said to them, “Do we have to bring water out of this rock for you?” (Numbers 20:10 msg)—as if this was something to be done in his own power—and then struck the rock! And not just once, but twice! The water did gush, so the people got what they wanted. But not in the way God wanted it to happen.
God says Moses didn’t trust Him. If he had, he wouldn’t have distorted God’s directions, turned prideful, or let his irritation with the people get the best of him.
Has God ever told you to do a specific thing and, instead of following His directions exactly, you did it your own way—and perhaps even justified your doing so? If so, ask God to help you not strike out again.
Lord, help me trust You every day, making Your way my way.
