Behold, God is my helper and ally; the Lord is my upholder. . . .For He has delivered me out of every trouble.
Psalm 54:4, 7 AMPC
David was in big trouble. The Ziphites, among whom David had been hiding, had promised to deliver David into Saul’s hands (see 1 Samuel 23:19–20). Yet instead of wallowing in worry, David expected God to save him. Assured that God was with Him, David called Him his helper and ally. He had no doubt God would avenge those who had betrayed his position to the king.
Later in Psalm 54, David promised to praise God for what He was about to do. In fact, David, who was running from His enemy, talked as if God had already rescued him: “He has delivered me out of every trouble”!
And the result of such expectant faith? Just when Saul and his men were closing in on David, a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Make haste and come, for the Philistines have made a raid on the land” (1 Samuel 23:27 AMPC). So Saul left David’s Rock of Escape (see 1 Samuel 23:28 AMPC) to pursue the Philistines.
There is tremendous power in expectant prayer. Pray as if God has already answered yours—even if you are still on the run. Know that God, your Rock, has already planned your escape.
You, Lord, my Rock and Refuge, You have delivered me out of every trouble. I sing praises to Your name!
