Balancing Humility

Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.
2 James 4:7–10 MSG

A friend said to me, “I thought I had finally learned to be humble. Then I realized I was proud of it!”

I could relate. How do we balance humility with allowing the Lord to work through us to do something significant? Think of Moses, one of the notable men in the Bible. We’re told he was meek, yet he led that huge nation of unruly Israelites for forty years in the wilderness.

How about Isaiah, a godly prophet? When God invaded his space, Isaiah realized he was unclean. Humility opened the door for the Lord to use him powerfully.

In more recent history, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington were humble men who honored God, and He used them to deal with enormous issues in a growing nation.

Most of us never reach such lofty positions, but whether we’re raising children, working on an assembly line, or teaching college classes, everyone can become proud—or stay humble.

Picture yourself hand in hand with Jesus as you go about your daily life. Next to Him, there is absolutely no room for pride. Kneel before Him. Listen to His instructions and encouragement. The closer we stay to the Master, the more clearly we see ourselves and realize we are totally dependent on Him. In His presence, pride melts away and leaves us humble.

Father God, I fall to my knees before You in humble adoration, and thank You for providing everything I need to accomplish the work You have planned for me. Amen.
