“O Lord, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.”
1 Chronicles 17:20 NKJV
What was the first thing your ears heard this morning? After your alarm, that is. What did you listen to while you brushed your teeth, drove to work, made a run to the grocery store, or picked up the kids from a summer activity? Chances are, you were listening to some form of music while you were completing some of these duties. In fact, according to a 2014 survey conducted by Edison Research, most US citizens listen to about four hours of audio per day.
Four hours is one-sixth of your day. It’s a lot of time for mental stimulation or acquiring information or receiving inspiration. What is filling your ears, penetrating your heart, and affecting your mood? Challenge yourself this month to increase the amount of time you spend listening to Christian music and programming. A mind can only take so much of the talk show rants and human-interest stories and catastrophic news, not to mention the detriment of sexually charged dialogue and politically correct but biblically incorrect commentaries. Go through the playlist on your device and examine it through the grid of God’s Word. Set your satellite or traditional radio stations to choices that will glorify Christ and edify you. And then watch your attitude take on a new look.
Dear God, I ask for forgiveness where I have dishonored You with my listening and for grace to make the changes that are needed. In Jesus’ name, amen.
