“Listen to this, Job; stop and consider God’s wonders. Do you know how God controls the cloud and makes his lightning flash? Do you know how the clouds hang poised, those wonders of him who is perfect in knowledge?”
Job 37:14–16 NIV
On a late summer morning, as the sun streamed through the window, Charlotte sat at her desk and stopped for a moment. She heard a radio blasting a popular song through the hallway, muffled sounds of her daughter talking on her cell phone in her bedroom, the washing machine rumbling in the laundry room.
Today the sounds of an ordinary morning caught at her heart. Charlotte knew it wouldn’t last. Change was coming. Her daughter would be leaving for college soon, and those noises would move with her. It wasn’t that Charlotte couldn’t accept change. It was just that for one moment she stopped, paused, and really soaked up the sweet ordinariness of family life. Too rare, too rare.
“Stop and consider My wonders,” God told Job. Then He pointed to ordinary observations of the natural world surrounding Job—the clouds that hung poised in the sky, the flashes of lightning. “Not so very ordinary” was God’s lesson. Maybe He was trying to remind us that there is no such thing as ordinary. Let’s open our eyes and see the wonders around us.
O Father, teach me to stop and consider the ordinary moments of my life as reminders of You. Help me not to overlook Your daily care and provisions that surround my day. Amen.
