Praise our God, all peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard; he has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping.
Psalm 66:8–9 NIV
This is one of those psalms that sounds lovely—until you read a little bit further. The verses begin by rejoicing in the God who has “preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping” (Psalm 66:9). But how did God do this? By testing His people: “You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs. You let people ride over our heads; we went through fire and water” (vv. 11–12).
Doesn’t sound like much fun, right? And surely those actions would not be on anyone’s list of Top 10 Ways to Prevent Slips and Falls. But God works in mysterious ways indeed. Sometimes He carries you. But other times He pushes you to grow the strength you need to carry yourself. He’s the ultimate trainer—seeing all your weaknesses and knowing exactly which muscles must be stretched to get you to your goal. Yet He pushes you even past that—past the small dreams you have into a place of abundance you could never imagine.
As you walk with Him today, consider the many times He has kept you from falling. Praise Him for testing you and refining you. Thank Him for laying burdens on you that in the end made you stronger.
God, stretch me, move me, push me, test me. Amen.
