Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 2:4–5 NKJV
The word for, by itself, seems to be somewhat meek and mild. But to be for someone is a powerful act. And it’s the key to beautiful and meaningful relationships.
Looking for opportunities to be for someone else can come in a variety of packages. Encourage her strength or applaud her talent. Remember an important event in her life. Believe the best when faults are obvious.
Notice the understated balance in the relationship equation outlined in the verses above. It’s acceptable (and expected!) for you to look after your own interests as well as those of others. So remember to be for yourself. Celebrate an event important to you, be kind to yourself, notice your strengths, and follow your dreams.
And remember, above all, that God is for you. In fact, with Him for you, who can be against you? (see Romans 8:31). He demonstrates His forness daily in a thousand ways. He listens to you. Applauds your good works. Supports you when you are standing alone. He is so perfectly and personally for you that He gave His Son’s life so that you could live, love, walk—and think—as He did. Your job? Go for it, as He intended.
Thank You for being for me, God! Amen.
