Then the angel said to me. . .“These are the true words of God.” At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me,
“Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus.”
Revelation 19:9–10 NIV
In this passage from Revelation 19, readers are warned not to worship angels. The moment John falls at the angel’s feet in reverent adulation, the heavenly being stops John with a rebuke, telling John that he also is a servant of Christ, and that John is to worship God.
Perhaps you are not at all surprised by the angel’s response. True, you may be faithful in church and don’t openly worship anyone but God, but do you choose to entertain private idols when you think no one is looking?
Or do you deify “things,” such as recognition, money, or time? Do you rush off in the morning, stay at a breakneck speed all day, then drop into a comatose-like sleep on the couch? Perhaps you use the same modus operandi the next day. And the next. And then the weeks and months melt away without your thinking about what really matters. Would that same angel like to have a few words with you about your worship habits?
Lord Jesus, may I always worship You alone, using all I have and am for Your glory. Amen.
