“With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.”
2 Chronicles 32:8 NIV
Hezekiah had been working hard for God, undertaking the service of God’s temple. But after all this hard work, King Sennacherib of Assyria came to make war against Jerusalem.
Hezekiah gathered his people and made plans. He delivered a rousing speech that could have come straight out of a Hollywood movie—telling his people not to be afraid of the king of Assyria, “for there is a greater power with us than with him” (2 Chronicles 32:7 NIV). And it worked! The people “gained confidence” (v. 8 NIV) and stood up to the Assyrian army.
Then Hezekiah and Isaiah prayed and the Lord sent an angel “who annihilated all the fighting men” (v. 21 NIV) of Assyria. So the Lord saved Hezekiah and Jerusalem, just as He had saved His people before, and just as He would do again and again.
This same God is continuing to fight for you today—answering your prayers and giving you confidence to do battle against any kind of power that seeks to control your heart. You may not ever have to fight off kings and armies, but you can count on your Lord to give you strength to defend your peace.
Lord, thank You for helping me fight my battles. Amen.
