A happy heart makes the face cheerful.
Proverbs 15:13 NIV
Can you remember the last time you laughed in wild abandon? Better yet, when was the last time you did something fun, outrageous, or out of the ordinary? Perhaps it is an activity you haven’t done since you were a child, like slip down a waterslide, strap on a pair of ice skates, or pitch a tent and camp overnight.
Women often become trapped in the cycle of routine, and soon we lose our spontaneity. Children, on the other hand, are innately spontaneous. Giggling, they splash barefoot in rain puddles. Wide-eyed, they watch a kite soar toward the treetops. They make silly faces without inhibition; they see animal shapes in rock formations. In essence, they possess the secret of serendipity.
A happy heart turns life’s situations into opportunities for fun. For instance, if a storm snuffs out the electricity, light a candle and play games, tell stories, or just enjoy the quiet. When we seek innocent pleasures, we glean the benefits of a happy heart.
Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10 KJV). God wants us to enjoy life, and when we do, it lightens our load and changes our countenance.

So try a bit of whimsy just for fun. And rediscover the secret of serendipity.
Dear Lord, because of You, I have the secret to a happy heart. Lead me to do something fun and spontaneous today! Amen.
