He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Isaiah 40:29 NIV
A regular exercise program is essential to keep our bodies functioning the way God designed them to. One of the components of an effective exercise regime is the development of core strength. These muscles—the abdomen, trunk, and back—are responsible for strength, stabilization, and balance. Strong core muscles protect our spines, enable us to stand and move gracefully, and prevent the development of chronic pain. Investing the time and energy in developing and maintaining core muscles pays enormous dividends.
The same is true for our spiritual core muscles. Our spiritual core consists of foundational elements from which our lives move. It can include core beliefs—about who God is and the role of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in our daily lives.
Another spiritual core muscle can be principles on which we build our lives—what is our purpose on earth? What is our motivation for working, living, and interacting with others? Who are we in Christ? We can exercise our spiritual core by reading God’s Word every day, praying about everything, and spending time in fellowship with other believers.
A strong spiritual core will help ensure that you remain stable and secure in a changing world. That you are able to keep from falling and that you are able to move and live gracefully. As you exercise your physical body, also make a commitment to regularly exercise your spiritual core as well.
Father, help me to return again and again to the core foundations of my spiritual health. Amen.
