Honor Your Parents

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Exodus 20:12 KJV

Honoring your parents is a lifelong duty. It looks different at four, fourteen, and forty, but it is a commandment important enough that almighty God chose to include it in a list of just ten.

This commandment may be difficult for an adult woman to know how to obey. You know you should honor your mother and father, but it is not always simple. What exactly does honor entail? You are an adult, and yet they are still your parents. Furthermore, what if your parents are unbelievers?

These are not easy questions to answer, but the commandment is fairly cut and dry. Honor them, respect them, treat them well, listen to them, and never speak ill of them to others. You may not follow all of your parents’ advice. Now that you are an adult, you are not required to do so. It is still admirable to seek it at times. They know you well, and they have lived longer than you have. They may have helpful input.

If your parents are not believers, honor them in every way possible so long as it does not cause you to stumble in your walk with the Lord. We are always called to put the Lord first.

God, help me to honor my parents as You have instructed me to do. Amen.
