If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?
Psalm 130:3 NIV
The answer to the psalmist’s question is an easy one.
No one in the world would be able to stand. No one’s record is pure. Every human on the earth has sinned or will sin.
Imagine for a moment what your record of sins might look like. Would it be a short volume with just a few pages in it? Or would it be a giant, heavy tome, with small, cramped printing filling every space on every single one of its thousands of pages?
No matter what your record might entail, if you accept Jesus as your Savior, all those entries will be deleted.
Erased.
Cleaned.
Wiped out.
You still have to deal with the consequences of those sins. You still bear scars. But you can stand because, with God, there is forgiveness.
And God asks you to forgive others in the same way. The consequences—broken relationships, hurt feelings, damaged people— won’t be erased. But God does not want you to hold things over people all their lives. If you try to do that, you will only end up with tired hands from clenching on to darkness. God wants you instead to delete those records of wrongs, open your fists, and bring your empty hands to serve Him.
Lord, my Savior and Redeemer, help me forgive others in the same way You forgive me. Amen.
