You are not your own; you were bought at a price.
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NIV
“I wanna do it by my own self,” the child shouts, stomping his little foot. From the time humans can speak, they try to get their own way. Even toddlers with no words will run the other way as soon as they sense others trying to corral them. Everyone likes to be able to do their own thing.
But the trouble is, people are not their own thing. They are God’s things.
Only God knows what’s good for people. As Paul put it, “ ‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say—but not everything is beneficial” (1 Corinthians 6:12). Because people aren’t perfect creatures, and definitely not perfectly good, they often get it wrong when they are making decisions about what’s good for them or calculating how their decisions will affect others. People need God’s help.
That’s why it’s so important to spend time in God’s Word every day. We have to be reminded about what’s good and what’s not. We have to be reminded to go toward the Father and not run off in the opposite direction.
You were bought at a price—at the immeasurably high price of Jesus’ life on the cross. Once you have accepted His sacrifice, you cannot behave as you did before. You are not on your own anymore. And really, who would want to?
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving Your life for me. Help me live like I know it! Amen.
