Be Still and Listen

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
James 3:17-18 NIV

James wrote about two types of wisdom. There’s the world’s wisdom, which is characterized by “bitter envy and selfish ambition” (James 3:14 NIV). And then there’s the wisdom that we believers find as we trust in God. This wisdom produces great characteristics within us such as peace, humility, mercy, and more. The qualities take time to reap, but, as you continue trusting God, they will become a more natural part of who you are.

But how do you get there from here? By listening to God. Solomon himself wrote in Proverbs 21:11 (MSG), “Simpletons only learn the hard way, but the wise learn by listening.”

Are you listening to God? Take a little inventory: How is the noise level in your life? Are you constantly running from one thing to the next? Do you feel worn out? Are you constantly filling what could be quiet time with constant chatter or noise like the radio, TV, or other forms of media?

If you want to reap the wisdom and righteousness that comes from trusting in God, then take some quiet time to be still and listen.

Lord, in these moments I have with You right now, help me listen to Your promptings. Help me to trust You more.
