[The Sadducees] arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out.

Arrested and imprisoned out of jealousy (see v. 17), the disciples were no doubt praying about how to handle this new setback when an angel of the Lord flung open the jail doors. The heavenly being told the astonished believers God’s command: “ ‘Go to the Temple and take your stand. Tell the people everything there is to say about this Life’ ” (Acts 5:20 MSG). And so they did, leaving behind the still-locked prison and a befuddled captain of the guard (vv. 21–24).
If God has something for you to do, what’s going to stop you? Perhaps you have seen His prison-breaking handiwork in your community: funds coming in for adoption fees; closed countries approving visas for undercover missionaries; parents taking their baby girl home after months in the neonatal intensive care unit when they’d been told she’d had little chance of survival; a text from your sister, who has shown no interest in Jesus, wanting to talk about spiritual things.
No one and nothing can stop what the Lord has planned for you to do to glorify Him. Though you will have your jail-cell nights, wait for His power to fling open those doors and then tell everyone about what He’s done!
Jesus, thank You that You are on my side!
