What Are You Clinging To?

Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
Romans 12:9 NIV

The invention of superglue was revolutionary, because the glue has the ability to bond immediately with a variety of materials. That is wonderful news if your grandmother’s porcelain vase breaks in half. But superglue must be used with extreme caution. Accidents can happen in a split second. If the tiniest drop falls in the wrong place, two items will unintentionally and permanently bond.

What are you clinging to? Bonding takes place as we draw close to something. So we must choose to cling to what is good and avoid evil at all costs. We should not even flirt with sin, because it can quickly get a foothold in our lives. Like superglue in the wrong place, we could unintentionally find ourselves in bondage by embracing temptation. What may seem innocent at the time could destroy us.

Beware of your temptations. Know your areas of vulnerability and avoid them. If you struggle with unhealthy eating habits, do not buy tempting foods. Is gossip a temptation? Then avoid the company of friends that enjoy passing on tidbits about others. If overspending is an issue, stay away from the mall. Instead, draw close to the Lord. Allow Him to satisfy your deepest longings. When we cling to good, evil loses its grip.

Dear Lord, help me avoid temptation. May I draw close to You so I can cling to good and avoid evil in my life. Amen.
