One of the angels ordered, “Run for your lives! And don’t look back or stop anywhere in the valley! Escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away”. . . . But Lot’s wife looked back as she was following behind him, and she turned into a pillar of salt.
Genesis 19:17, 26 NLT
Betsy sat at her kitchen table, reminiscing about the past, wishing she could go back. For the future before her was unknown territory. And she wasn’t sure she had the strength to deal with it.
We all think about the people, places, and things we have loved and left behind. But God doesn’t want us to become like Lot’s wife, so focused on the past that we miss what He’s doing in the present. He wants our hearts fixed on His love and strength, our eyes focused on the road before us.
Jesus said, “Remember Lot’s wife. Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it” (Luke 17:32–33 NKJV). Mrs. Lot is a blatant example of what happens when we try to save our lives. We’re stopped in our spiritual tracks. But when we don’t look back, when we stop clinging to what was, we end up saving our lives!
Where are your heart and eyes? Take stock now, find a way to let go, and grab hold of all God is doing on the road before you.
Lord, help me to let go of the things I love that I’ve left behind. Help me to let go of my past so that I can live a new life in You! Amen.
