“See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.”
Luke 11:35 NIV
Kids love to play in a room lit with black light. It makes light and bright colors—even your teeth—seem to glow. Black light works by emitting light that’s mostly invisible to the human eye—what you see from such a bulb is a soft purplish light. The light shines on items that have phosphor—a substance that converts the energy in the ultraviolet light into light you can see. But you would never want to use black light to study or read by—it’s not so good for the eyes.
In Luke 11, Jesus is talking to His disciples about the kind of light they have. He says, “When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light” (v. 34). And He warns them to make sure the light they think they’re carrying is not really darkness in disguise.
How many times have you felt a surge of happiness or a thrill of purpose, only to later realize that what you thought was a solid change in your heart was really created by a fleeting emotion or an artificial cause? The light of Jesus won’t leave you wanting. It won’t come in a moment and leave you in the next. It’ll stay and grow and give warmth and banish every bit of darkness.
Lord, help me be able to discern true light from darkness. Amen.
