Pushing Through the Fear

“Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take.”
Joshua 1:9 MSG

Maybe you have a presentation to make, a cake to bake, or an exam to take. Or perhaps you are facing spiders or snakes or laundry stains. Maybe you are biting your tongue—afraid to speak up, speak out, and tell your story. Maybe you think you have to wait until your knees stop shaking to take that step.

But you don’t have to wait. Having courage doesn’t mean you won’t be afraid. It means pushing through the fear to act on what you know is right. And when you take that step into your fear, you can be 100 percent certain that God will meet you there. He will be there even when you feel like throwing up. He will stay there with you until the end.

Why do you think God kept repeating those words? “Strength! Courage!” It’s a pretty good bet He knew Joshua had some fears—after all, he had just been appointed by God to lead this people of Israel (who, as you might recall, were not the most cooperative bunch) to take over the land God was giving them. Joshua needed to hear those words over and over again, to be reminded that the same God who was with Moses was still standing with him now.

Lord, help me obey Your Word with all the strength and courage You can give. Amen.
