Everyone today wants a beautiful smile. And providers have cashed in on this desire! It’s a very cool thing for adults to have braces, and whitening procedures are now considered practically a necessity. Yet, though we may have the teeth for it, most of us probably don’t wear a smile very often. I wonder why. Smiling, we are told, uses fewer facial muscles than frowning. It is truly a gift that costs us nothing. Smiling is the fastest way to communicate welcome, joy, and kindness. “Smile and the world smiles with you; cry and you cry alone.”
I think Jesus smiled a lot. We don’t know what kind of temperament He had in His earthly form, but I believe He had the best traits of all the types—sanguine, choleric, melancholy, and phlegmatic. Certainly, His personality wasn’t warped by the selfishness of sin and He always had time for others. It is my opinion that He had a sense of humor. I also think He took delight in the world around Him and the people in it.
We are reminded often to be Christlike in our attitudes, words, and conduct. But what if we were to add to that list a challenge to be like Him in smiling at others? Of course, we don’t know for sure, but there could certainly be nothing wrong with giving encouragement to others we meet throughout the day by letting our faces reflect the joy of the Lord in our hearts.
Lord, I want to be like You. Help me give others the gift of my smile so that they can see You in me. Amen.
