They angered God by building shrines to other gods; they made him jealous with their idols.
Psalm 78:58 NLT
God wasn’t joking when He issued the Ten Commandments. The Almighty was serious when He decreed that His people have no other gods before Him. He alone is to be loved with all one’s heart, mind, and soul.
The Israelites struggled with this. Remember the scene? While Moses was at the top of the mountain, they rebelled at its base, melting down gold jewelry to construct a golden calf that they planned to worship!
Before you shake your head in disapproval, look to your own life. Where do you have other gods? A god is anything you put before your heavenly Father. Has money become your focus? Do you value a relationship or even a child above God? How about your career? Your house, your car, your status, your position at your church?
Take inventory of your idols on a regular basis, rooting them out of your life just as you would dig up weeds from a garden. Other gods will choke the life out of you, steal your joy, and destroy your fellowship with your Creator.
Have no other gods before Him.
Heavenly Father, You are my God. You are the one true God, my Creator and King. Amen.
