How to Be Wise

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
Proverbs 6:6–8 NIV

Wouldn’t you prefer to be called productive rather than lazy? If so, consider the ways of the ant and discover how to be wise instead of wasteful.

The lessons from the ant are simple and threefold: First, the ant “has no commander.” So find a way to motivate yourself, something that will keep you working without having someone standing over you making sure you do the task before you. Second, the ant has a strategy, one that follows the seasons. So plan your own course. Determine steps to achieve your goal—with God’s input, of course. Third, the ant gathers and stores. So should you take action. Scrutinize obstacles that have held you up before, and sidestep them. Go after your dreams, making sure your heart’s desires also match God’s.

By studying the ant’s habits, you will gain wisdom that will benefit your life. God knows productivity will produce a happier and more satisfying life for you. But be sure to schedule time for rest and relaxation to live a truly balanced, godly life. Queen ants are known to sleep nine hours a day, and worker ants enjoy power naps!

God, thank You for instilling good habits in the ant. Help me incorporate their ways into my daily life. Amen.
