Hear God’s Spirit Speak

For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. . . . Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God.
1 Corinthians 2:10, 12

Have you ever tried to learn a foreign language? In high school I decided to take Spanish, and although I met the class requirements, I certainly didn’t display unusual proficiency. Years later, God brought many Spanish-speaking people into my life. After taking a “Speed Spanish” course at the local junior college, my skills were rejuvenated enough so I could speak on a rudimentary level. Later I took a more in-depth class, and as long as I practiced, the ability to speak and understand Spanish came fairly easily.

This is exactly how to understand the things of God. You can’t rely totally on what you received in your early education.

If you came to Christ as an adult then it’s probably necessary to start from the beginning, using the Bible, not your memory. Find out what you believe and know why. If you never arrive at this understanding, how on earth can you share your faith with others?

Here’s an excuse heard often: “We can’t try to interpret the Bible ourselves because we’ll get confused.” But to refuse the Holy Spirit the opportunity to instruct you, as He promised He would, is to refuse true understanding.

Lord, fill my mind and heart with true understanding. Help me to hear God’s Spirit speak.
