For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about; but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.”
Romans 4:2–3
Our work ethic is as old as the Garden of Eden. Because of sin Adam’s free ride was over and he would now have to earn a living. But God said, “ ‘Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, “You shall not eat from it”; cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life’ ” (Genesis 3:17).
Somehow men and women have transferred this attitude about working for things to salvation. However, salvation is not based on our “goodness,” but rather on Christ’s. For no matter how diligently we try to keep those Ten Commandments, we’re going to fail.
God made Abraham, the one the Jews claim as their father, a promise and he believed God.
His belief wasn’t merely an intellectual assent. The “Supreme God of the Universe,” who made absolutely everything that Abraham now saw in his world, had deigned not only to speak to him, but He promised him an heir. The reason that Abraham could place his trust in God was because God kept His promises. No matter how impossible the situation looks, God always comes through.
I thank You that I worship a God whose Word can be trusted. I know Jesus will always be there for me.
