Be Wise with Your Words

Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.
Ephesians 5:4 NLT

When we come across passages like this, we tend to get defensive and think things like, This isn’t speaking about me. Such things don’t bother me. But let’s take a moment to think of the reason this verse could have been written.

Have you ever been in a crowd of friends, having a wonderful time, when suddenly the crude jokes started flowing? Or someone began telling you some inappropriate story that made you squirm? The once good, joyful atmosphere suddenly takes on a heavy, almost sickening feel. Such stories don’t encourage. In fact, they do the opposite. They discourage, depress, or, worse, push others toward sin.

What do you want to be known for? Are you the one bringing life to the party by smiling, uplifting others, and speaking about wholesome things? Or are you the one bringing it down, swiftly and surely? Are you the one pushing others toward sin?

Whether we choose to believe it or not, our lips hold incredible power. Use them for good! Be wise with your words and you will honor the Lord and your friends with what you say. You will gain honor, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of your peers.

Lord, I realize that my lips bear great power. Forgive me for any foolish words I have spoken, and please redeem them. Bless my lips to speak only what is true, uplifting, and good, that I may bring life.
