Give Out of Need

“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
Luke 6:38 NLT

As usual, Jesus saw things from a different perspective. He was in the temple, watching people bring their gifts. Instead of honoring the Pharisees, with all their pomp and circumstance, Jesus points out a poor widow. “ ‘Truly I tell you,’ He said, ‘this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on’ ” (Luke 21:3–4 NIV).

While the rich gave out of their abundance, the widow gave out of her need. It’s not difficult to give when we are sure all our needs are met. We just scrape a little off the top and leave it in the offering plate. Giving out of our poverty is a profound act of faith. When we lay our all on the altar, God promises to multiply it beyond our wildest imagination. What are you holding back from the Lord today? Give. God cannot wait to multiply your efforts.

Father, help me to be a giver. Teach me to give out of faith in You, not in my finances. Reveal to me where I may be holding back, waiting until my own needs for time or money are met. I long to trust You with the poor widow’s faith. Amen.
