Be Still

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Psalm 46:10 NIV

As you were growing up, how many times were you told to sit or stand still? And honestly, they were “tells” even if the adult added a “please.” It may have seemed like you were merely being asked to be quiet, or not fidget, or not bump into another child, or not kick the seat in front of you. Could we as children have misread these dictates to be still? Were we actually being told to calm ourselves so that we might hear or learn something important rather than just as a control of our outward behavior?

Our earthly parents told us to be still just as our heavenly Father has instructed us to be still. When we calm ourselves physically and mentally, we are better able to focus our minds and listen with our hearts. We become open to hearing the Lord’s direction for our lives. We allow ourselves to feel the peace that comes with the presence of the Holy Spirit within us.

Quiet time is a precious commodity. With mobile electronic devices, it seems we are constantly communicating via phone, text, or social media. Consider making time to put the electronics down and give yourself the gift of being still.

Lord, in all the busyness I call my life, please help me to heed Your command to be still. I know You are my God and will direct me when I make quiet time to focus on You. Amen.
