A Happy Heart

For the despondent, every day brings trouble; for the happy heart, life is a continual feast.
Proverbs 15:15 NLT

British comedian, actress, and singer Joyce Grenfell once said, “Happiness is the sublime moment when you get out of your corsets at night.” Of course, we no longer wear corsets, but what a wonderful feeling it is to take off those control-top panty hose and brassieres before getting into our pajamas. It’s those modest moments of pleasure that make us smile. But they are so easy to overlook. The trick is to search for them each and every day.

Find some moments of pleasure in the smallest of things—the smile on your baby’s face (regardless of whether or not it’s from gas), the crazy antics of your cat or dog, the sparkle in your husband’s eyes, the squirrels frolicking across your lawn. Instead of focusing on the troubles that lie before you, make sure you take time out for all the good things that are happening. And if good things seem far and few between, make them happen. Take a bubble bath while reading a good book. Paint your nails. Buy a coloring book and have at it! Play your ukulele. Do something that makes you laugh out loud or smile in utter contentment. Look to have a continual feast in the blessings of God as you serve Him and others with all the gladness in your heart.

Help me to find humor, joy, and contentment in the simple things in life, Lord. Give me a happy heart that continues to feast on Your goodness—and then passes that joy along! Amen.
