Would you bow down, worship, or pray to something formed by human hands?
While people throughout the history of the earth have worshipped golden calves and stone figures, there are other types of idols that are just as dangerous. Perhaps more so!
Anything placed above God is an idol and has the potential of becoming, in fact, a god. A good question to ask yourself to test if you have allowed idols to creep into your life is, “What do I spend the most time doing or thinking about?”
Could social media be an idol? You bet! Compare the amount of time you spend scrolling through posts or sending messages with the amount of time you spend in God’s Word. Which one wins? Which one leads you closer to the one true God? Which one might be a “lowercase g” god in your life?
These questions are the litmus test. The challenge is to root out other gods from your life. Your God is a jealous God. You shall have no other gods before Him. (See Exodus 20:3–5.)
God, help me take the first step and identify any idols in my life. Once I’ve named my idols, give me the strength to stamp them out of my life. Amen.
