Persistent Love

Thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.”
Isaiah 43:1 NKJV

It is a beautiful thing to know someone is seeking you out, taking the initiative and interest. Though we are called to search for God, we can only do this because He first called us. What encouragement to know that He asks the research and heart of humans only after He has done all He could to pursue us. Jesus is the One who does the knocking for us to open the door of our hearts. In C. S. Lewis’s The Silver Chair, Aslan and Jill have a similar discussion: “ ‘You would not have called to me unless I had been calling to you,’ said the Lion.”

There must be mutual concern and care, as in any relationship. We must seek Him, but knowing that He has done the hardest work for us and that, as we seek Him, He is still pursuing us. He gave the written word, the Word incarnate, and the Spirit in order to show how much He longs for us. God has provided rescue for humans while we were still sinners. He calls us by name to accept the sacrifice of Jesus and then to live in the light of His message. We seek because we are sought after; we must also, as in the likeness of Christ, seek out others.

Greatest of Seekers, thank You for such a persistent love. Amen.
