Our God is a consuming fire.
Hebrews 12:29 NKJV
The Holy Spirit is often referred to as a fire. Each believer’s heart carries that flaming light of God. Just as heat boils out impurities in elements such as gold, so the Spirit burns in our hearts both to refine and to fuel the work He has called us to do.
Paul admonishes believers not to quench the fire (1 Thessalonians 5:19). However, many restrict it from growing so there is barely a glow in the coals of their bellies. They fear that the flames might actually spread and purify their hearts, compelling them to give up their darling sins—the ones that aren’t hurting anyone, the ones that stay hidden.
So when the heart is convicted of sin, it’s easier to smother the Spirit with logic and justification. This keeps the sinner neither hot nor cold, but comfortably lukewarm.
Henry Blackaby wrote, “If the Spirit speaks to you about God’s will for you, and if you refuse to take action, a time will come when the Spirit’s voice will be muted in your life.”
Is it time to remove the bushel that has hidden your light so long and trust God’s Spirit? Fuel your fire with prayer, obedience, and meditation, and watch in amazement as God transforms you into what He’s always wanted you to be.
Father, let the fire of the Holy Spirit blaze and spread among Your people so that we burn with passion for Your Word and the coming of Your kingdom.
