The Lord knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile.
Psalm 94:11 NIV
Ever have your plans blow up in your face? In 1 Kings 12, King Jeroboam of Israel had a pretty good plan to keep his kingship out of trouble, but it backfired in a big way. God had promised a throne for Jeroboam and his descendants if he was obedient to His commands, but Jeroboam was worried about one little detail—the temple in Jerusalem. He feared that if his people traveled to Judah to worship, they would defect to King Rehoboam, his rival. So Jeroboam made golden calves in Israel as a stand-in for the temple. As did Aaron, Jeroboam severely disobeyed God’s commands by doing this, and while it didn’t happen immediately, his kingly line disintegrated.
Certainly you have made plans for a secure life: working toward a full savings account or keeping your family healthy or other good goals. But what’s driving your plans—fear of the future or faith that God’s grace will be there for you in the future? Every Christian struggles with this. But relying on anything for security apart from God never ends well. . .and it puts distance between you and Him. Where is fear steering your way? Pour out your worries to Him, and He will restore your heart with His abiding peace (see John 16:33).
Jesus, help me plan to trust You; teach my heart to expect Your grace in what’s ahead.
