Living the Truth

“And you—what are you saying about me? Who am I?”
Luke 9:20 MSG

Jesus had just fed a crowd of more than five thousand when He asked His disciples, “What are the crowds saying about me, about who I am?” (Luke 9:18 MSG). It seems the crowds were pretty befuddled. Some confused Jesus with John the Baptist. Some said He was Elijah, the prophet who was mysteriously whisked away on a whirlwind up to heaven. Still others went with the vaguer concept that Jesus was some other prophet from long ago who had come to walk the earth again.

But then He asked the question of His disciples—His circle of friends. What would their answer be? He had questioned their faith before; perhaps He was doing so again.

He gave the right answer. But later Peter would deny knowing anything about who this Jesus was, just as He was being prepared to be crucified.

There’s knowing the truth, and then there’s living the truth. Often, it’s hard to do both at once. But the difficult thing is that how you live speaks to others about what you know to be true. And many times, how you live speaks much louder.

So take some time to reflect. What is your life saying about Jesus?

Lord, let my life speak the truth about You. Amen.
