For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
2 Corinthians 5:1 NIV
Can you picture the house you’ll have in heaven? Neither can I, but it is fun to imagine what the Lord is building for those who love Him. Whatever He plans is sure to be more magnificent than anything my limited mind can come up with.
Today’s verse mentions our earthly tent—the body we dwell in now. Tents are temporary; certainly not designed for eternity. We spend a lot of time caring for these tents. We keep them strong, decorate them with nice coverings, paint them, and sometimes patch or repair broken parts. But they won’t last forever.
I love European castles that have weathered storms for hundreds of years. I’d like to wander through each one, to learn about the people who lived there and know what life was like for all the generations within those walls. In the United States, where two-hundred-year-old buildings are considered ancient, the idea of fortresses from the 1300s or before is mind-boggling. Yet even those will eventually crumble.
But the house God is preparing for us isn’t a do-it-yourself project. He’s building us a mansion that will be more exquisite than any castle. It is crafted with His indescribable love. And no storm or fire or other disaster can destroy our heavenly home. It will endure for eternity.
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for the home You’re building for me with Your power and love, a home that will last forever. Amen.
