“I will pour out my Spirit on every kind of people: Your sons will prophesy, also your daughters. Your old men will dream, your young men will see visions.”
Joel 2:28–32 MSG
Has God ever given you a dream or vision? Peter quoted this verse from Joel on the day of Pentecost, when God poured out the Holy Spirit on new believers. The prophecy was fulfilled then, and continues today.
We need to ask God for wisdom and discernment about supernatural occurrences, but that doesn’t mean we should dismiss dreams, visions, and prophecies as poppycock. God speaks to His children in many creative ways. It’s thrilling to know He does—tragic if we don’t listen.
Maybe we have trouble thinking the Lord would give us a significant dream because we feel unworthy. But after all, today’s scripture mentions “every kind of people.” That sounds pretty all-inclusive. If we don’t expect to hear from Him, we won’t even pay attention. If we belong to Him, we should have our spiritual ears tuned to hear Him whenever and however He chooses to communicate.
God does what it takes for us to notice—regardless of whether it seems logical. He even spoke through a donkey one time in the Bible (see Numbers 22:28). Hopefully, we won’t be that hard of hearing. We should welcome His voice, whether it’s through the scriptures, nature, dreams, a pastor, or any other creative means. Listen.
Precious Lord, I long to have my spirit tuned to receive Your dreams or visions or whatever You use to get through to me. Let me never ignore Your Spirit. Amen.
