Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Romans 12:15 NIV
True Christian friendship has this verse stamped all over it. Do you have a friend who truly finds joy in your successes? When you are on top of the world, this person is genuinely happy for you. When you are sad, you have seen tears come to her eyes. This is not a friendship that we find every day. It is rare and something we should treasure.
As believers in Christ, we have this high call on our lives. So, pray that you might truly celebrate with others, not secretly wishing you were the one receiving the blessing. On the other hand, know that at times sorrow and loss are so deep that a hug and an “I love you” will mean the world. Lots of words are not needed in such times. To mourn with the mourner is the greatest gift you can give. Just to show up, to extend help, to show love.
If you have such a friend, you no doubt cherish her. Make it your aim to live out Romans 12:15 in small ways this week. Stand and cheer when others are victorious. Stand close by and be ready to comfort them when they experience disappointment or loss. Experience true friendship.
Heavenly Father, help me to rejoice with those who rejoice and to mourn with those who mourn. Give me a sensitive heart that is focused on others so I can extend true friendship. Amen.
