Purpose Prevails

All these people were known for their faith, but none of them received what God had promised. God planned to give us something very special so that we would gain eternal life with them.
Hebrews 11:39-40 GW

In today’s reading we conclude Hebrews 11 by reading about people who trusted God and lived by faith all the way up until their final days on Earth. These people didn’t get to fully see the promises of God come to pass, but they knew they were living for something better, for a greater purpose than the here and now. That took trusting God to give them the eyes to see beyond their circumstances.

Proverbs 19:21 (NIV) says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” It’s easy to see it was the Lord’s purpose that prevailed in each and every one of the lives of Hebrews 11’s heroes of faith. Sure, they may have had plans in their own heart. For example, Abraham and Sarah tried to “help” God by giving birth to Ishmael through their servant Hagar. Thankfully, they also repented and turned back to walking by faith, trusting in and waiting on God to fulfill His promise according to His timeline. And they were rewarded for doing so!

Whatever is going on in your life today, commit it to Jesus. If He’s given you a promise, hold on to it.

Lord, I’m grateful that throughout history, and my story, Your purposes have always prevailed.
