One Thing Is Needed

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed.”
Luke 10:41–42 NIV

We are each given twenty-four hours in a day. Einstein and Edison had no more than Joseph and Jeremiah of the Old Testament. The president and the paratrooper are all given an equal share. Even Mother Teresa and plain ol’ women are peers when it comes to time.

Time—we can’t buy it, save it, or get a greater share no matter what we do. Its value is beyond measure. So we should learn to use it carefully. Do we tackle the laundry now or help the kids read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie one more time? Should we stay up late, cleaning the living room, or slip into bed early, knowing we need the rest? Do we fuss over our hair and makeup or find a moment to kneel before our Father?

Since God has blessed each of us with twenty-four hours, let’s seek His direction on how to spend this invaluable commodity wisely—giving more to people than things, spending more time on relationships than the rat race. In Luke, our Lord reminded dear, dogged, drained Martha that only one thing is needed—Him.

Father God, oftentimes, I am caught up in the minutia of life. The piled laundry can appear more important than the precious little ones You’ve given me. Help me to use my time wisely. Open my eyes to see what is truly important.
