God Watches Over You

He who watches over you will not slumber.
Psalm 121:3 NIV

You push the little button on your phone for the hundredth time. What does that say? 3:35? In the morning?

But still you sit, in the same chair you have been sitting in for the last five hours. Because you dare not move. If you move, she might wake up. And if she wakes up. . . Oh, no.

She woke up.

You go over to quiet her once again. You pat her back, feel her forehead. The fever seems better, but her breathing is so congested. She’s still crying, so you pick her up in your leaden arms. And you plop back down in the rocking chair, throw a blanket over both of you, and close your eyes as you listen to her sobs begin to slow.

If you have ever taken care of a small child who is sick in the night, you know what it’s like not to slumber. Even when you get so tired that your eyelids won’t stay open, you can’t really get into a deep sleep. A small sound—a sniffle, a cough, raspy breathing—wakes you.

God watches over you like a parent watching over a sick child in the night. Except God’s eyes never shut, and He never tires. He is always there to comfort you, guide you, and hold you in His strong arms.

God, thank You for watching over me even when I don’t realize You are. Amen.
