Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.
Proverbs 27:1 NIV
Planning ahead can be good. It’s wise to ready yourself for the days to come. A runner trains before a race. An aspiring engineer invests in a good education. A mother-to-be paints the nursery and sets up the crib. Looking forward is necessary for a healthy, successful life.
So when does planning become boasting? When does it become harmful? It might be that you have a very specific idea of how your future should unfold. You may believe you alone are in control of the course of your life and the type of person you will become. While it’s important to have dreams and goals, sometimes you can get so locked into what you think is best that you won’t be receptive to God’s movement or calling for your life. It could be that God’s plans for you are quite different from what you would have chosen. Perhaps you already feel a pull in a new direction, but making the change scares you or it’s not what you envisioned for yourself.
If you are having trouble handing over your future to God, remember that He knows you better than you know yourself. His plan will always be better. You may not know what tomorrow will bring, but God does, and He’s in control.
Lord, You know what I need more than I do. I trust You with all my tomorrows.
