A Nudge from God

“You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.”
John 4:35 NLT

When we notice a task that needs to be done, could it be a nudge from God? It’s easy to think someone else will take care of it—whatever it is. We may believe we’re not qualified or our schedule is too full, or we might even think it’s beneath us. Whether it is a job at church or in the community or within our families, finding excuses is simple.

Sometimes when we wonder how we can work in the spiritual harvest Jesus mentions, we get grandiose ideas, beyond what God intends. He may ask us to serve in a food pantry when we thought we should preach the Gospel in some remote country and lead hundreds to faith in Christ. Or He might want us to go to another nation, but what we’re to do there is play with children or carry concrete blocks to help build a one-room school.

The only way our work will matter eternally is to allow God to direct our plans, every day, and ask Him to show us exactly what will touch someone’s life. Most often, He will tell us simply to show His love in some uncomplicated way that comes naturally. Obeying in those effortless situations prepares us for the times when the Lord directs us to do something that requires total dependence on Him to accomplish.

Lord God, I choose to be available to work however You want me to, as You harvest the ripe fields. Amen.
