See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.
1 John 3:1 NLT
As a Christ-follower, you are specially marked. God has engraved His love on your soul and called you His child. You truly are a new creation. Because of this, you are no longer of this world. Your true home is with your Father in heaven. Your purpose is not to vie for earthly gain but to expand God’s spiritual kingdom. You are to dwell on the eternal and not the temporal.
This mentality is foreign in a world where often the main focuses are self-promotion and gathering material wealth. Since many people do not know or understand your heavenly Father, chances are you will be misunderstood. Your customs and behavior will seem strange and otherworldly. In one of his letters, Peter addresses Christians as sojourners and exiles. How true this is! He calls you this because you are seeking a better country to call your own. You know that your stay here is fleeting.
When the pressures of this world are overwhelming, remember that your Father has lavished His love on you. He is your refuge. He is your home.
Father, when I feel misplaced and alone, remind me that my hope rests in the promise of abundant, eternal life in a better country.
